Your recordings stay on your Mac

Last updated: June 2026

Recoly is a native macOS app that records, edits and exports entirely on-device. This page explains what Recoly captures, the one permission it needs, and what it never touches.

Local by default

Recording, editing, captions and export all run on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded to a server and there is no account to create.

Screen Recording permission

macOS asks for Screen Recording permission the first time you record. Recoly captures only the screen, window or area you choose — nothing in the background.

Microphone & camera

The mic and webcam are optional and off until you turn them on. When enabled, they are used only while you are recording.

No cloud, no tracking

Recoly does not upload your footage, read your files, or track what you record. There are no ad networks and no cross-site trackers.

Your files, your folder

Exports are saved where you choose. Your original recordings and project files live on your disk, in formats you own.

What Recoly never does

No keylogging, no silent background capture, no reading your clipboard. Recoly records only when you press record.

Apple Silicon and Intel

Recoly ships a native build for Apple Silicon and a separate one for Intel Macs. Both are signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple.

Open, DRM-free formats

Export to MP4, WebM, GIF or ProRes. Your videos have no DRM and no forced lock-in — they are just files.

Honest about captions

Captions are transcribed on-device with Whisper, so they never leave your Mac. As with any speech model, accuracy varies with audio quality — review before you publish.
